TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The deadline is approaching fast for high school students in Leon County to apply for a program designed to jumpstart careers before graduation.
The Leon Works Junior Apprenticeship Program offers paid, hands-on training for juniors and seniors in fields like construction, graphic design, emergency medical services and automotive services, while also allowing them to earn credits toward their diploma.
Kianna Gilley with Leon County Government said the program is especially valuable for students who may not plan to attend college but still want a pathway into high-demand careers.
“As soon as they graduate from high school, they will be able to tap into those careers,” she said. “There may be additional certificate programs here and there, but it’s not like four years and hundreds of thousands of dollars for a college degree to really tap into those careers.”

The program is a partnership between Leon County Government, CareerSource Capital Region and Leon County Schools.
Gilley said the initiative also helps students discover career paths they may not have otherwise considered.
Some students have already turned their apprenticeships into full-time jobs with the county. “There is a huge demand for skilled careers, really nationwide, but most especially in our community,” Gilley said.
The application deadline for the fall semester is March 31. Students can apply here.
