Officers said Rayshawn Smith’s 1-year-old child survived the overdose after undergoing “significant” medical treatment.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg man could face life in prison after his 1-year-old overdosed on fentanyl, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Investigators said 31-year-old Rayshawn Smith sold various kinds of drugs, including methamphetamine and fentanyl, between May 13, 2025, and Jan. 14, 2026.
On Nov. 13, 2025, while in the sole care of Smith, his 1-year-old child ingested and overdosed on fentanyl, requiring life-saving measures at the hospital, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. At the time, officers said the child survived after undergoing “significant” medical treatment.
An investigation led law enforcement to execute a search warrant at Smith’s house on Jan. 14, 2026. They reportedly recovered drugs, guns and drug paraphernalia.
Smith was arrested at a different location in his car, where authorities said they found additional drugs and drug packaging materials.
Smith was charged with distribution of a controlled substance resulting in great bodily injury, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, drug distribution, and possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon.
If convicted on all counts, Smith faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison.
This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the St. Petersburg Police Department. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Yara Dodin.
