An engaged father of three is dead following a fatal car crash in Florida.
On the morning of March 25, Kristopher David was driving his white BMW to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport — where he worked as a fueler — when a black Audi T-boned his car, per CBS News and NBC 6. The Audi then crashed into a Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue fire engine, per CBS.
David, 33 and another individual were rushed to the hospital following the collision. His mother, Loretta Matthew David, told CBS her son was in critical condition upon his arrival at the hospital, and was put on life support thereafter.
One day after the crash, David died from his injuries. His mother recalled the emotional moment she said goodbye to her son: she placed a hand on his chest and let her only child know it was okay to let go, per CBS.
“I always said to him, you are my heartbeat. If your heart stops, mine will,” she told the outlet.
David was a father to three daughters, per NBC 6; his oldest, aged 12, is taking David’s death especially hard, Loretta told CBS. David was also engaged and anticipated getting married this autumn, per NBC 6.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and Seventh Avenue, where security footage captured the sequence of events, CBS reported. Per the outlet, the video saw David’s white BMW slowly driving into the intersection when it was hit by the Audi.
“I watched a snippet of it,” his mother said of the surveillance footage. “There was no way that Kristopher could have avoided what happened. There was no way he could have.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue for comment.
