An outpouring of shock and sadness followed news this week of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen’s killing, allegedly at the hands of her husband, who now faces a first-degree murder charge.
Elected officials and public figures at all levels of government expressed sorrow and condolences, with many sharing personal stories and sentiments about how Metayer Bowen touched their lives.
More stories are sure to follow Friday evening, when a candlelight vigil will be held in her honor at Coral Springs City Hall.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said he and First Lady Casey DeSantis were “shocked and saddened” by the “terrible news” of Metayer Bowen’s killing.
“We send our condolences to Nancy’s friends and family.”
Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who represents Coral Springs, expressed similar dismay. He shared that Metayer Bowen was on the verge of announcing a bid for Congress.
“I was just with her on Saturday. She just buried her brother,” he wrote on X, referring to the December suicide of Metayer Bowen’s 26-year-old brother, Joshua, who was a survivor of the Feb. 14, 2018, mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD), Moskowitz’s alma mater.
Coral Springs Democratic Rep. Dan Daley, also an MSD alum and friend of Metayer Bowen’s, said he was “deeply saddened” by her passing.
“Nancy was someone who truly cared about people and about this community. She did not just hold office. She showed up, she listened, and she worked every day to move Coral Springs forward. Her commitment to public service and her belief in the future of our community were clear in everything she did,” he wrote.
“Anyone who spent even a few minutes with Nancy remembers her smile and enthusiasm for public service. It lit up a room and made you feel like you mattered. That is a rare quality, and it is something our community was better for. This is a tremendous loss for Coral Springs. My thoughts and prayers are with her family, her loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.”
In a lengthy statement, North Miami Democratic Rep. Dotie Joseph described Metayer Bowen as “a brilliant, compassionate, and fierce young leader whose untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout Florida’s Democratic family, the entire Haitian Diaspora, and all who have ever been impacted by domestic violence, gun violence, or femicide worldwide.”
“Our South Florida community lost a valiant woman who lived a life of service, as she broke barrier after barrier,” she said.
“As we seek justice for Nancy, we must also confront the quiet crisis of gender-based violence. Nancy’s death was not an isolated incident — it sits within a devastating and growing global pattern.”
Joseph noted that approximately 137 women and girls are killed every day by intimate partners or family members — one every 10 minutes — and in the U.S., more than 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner every month.
Metayer Bowen’s sister, writing on behalf of her family, wrote in a Wednesday post on Metayer Bowen’s Facebook page that they were “deeply saddened” by the tragedy.
“She was not only a cherished member of our family, but also a dedicated public servant who committed her life to improving the lives of others. Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose. She believed in bringing people together, listening to those she served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in her community. To us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love — someone who always put others before herself,” the post said.
“While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room. Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape but in the countless lives she touched. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and kindness during this difficult time. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her remarkable life and the lasting impact she leaves behind.”
The family asked for privacy while its members grieved and thanked “everyone for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.”

We collaborated for several years as community organizers and advocates before she got elected to the Coral Springs Commission. Her commitment to service and her impact on the lives of so many will not be forgotten. She truly cared about people, even when people were saying some of the most horrible things about her and us. She still cared, rolled up her sleeves, went to every event that she could go to, because she truly cared about people and making sure people had a relationship with their elected officials. … My soul is heavy. My heart is broken. … Our Commission is incomplete. And we know that time is going to move and do its thing. But for us in this City Hall who have been touched or impacted by Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, that is … a loss that is going to take a lot of time to deal with.”
— Coral Springs Manager Catherine Givens: “To say today is a very dark day for us in Coral Springs is an understatement. There are no words that can truly capture the depth of this loss or the pain this organization and community are now dealing with as a result of this senseless tragedy. What’s worse is the tremendous grief that her family must endure. And if you knew Nancy, her family was everything. Vice Mayor Mateyer gave so much of herself to our city. She wasn’t just a leader; she was the light in every room that she entered. She was a steady voice in difficult times, a compassionate soul who lifted others up and a friend to so many. Our hearts are truly broken. We know this brings shock and sorrow, and we are taking the necessary steps as city employees to be with those that are affected. … We ask the community to grieve with us. We are one family, one organization, one community, and we come together at these times. Please hold each other close as we mourn. And in closing, I want to say that we’re going to keep her light even in the darkest of days like today. We’re here for one another. We’re here for our community.”
