TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Florida Capital Bureau) – Hundreds of state law enforcement members gathered to commemorate their fallen.
The Florida Department of Corrections held its annual memorial ceremony Friday at the Wakulla Correctional Institution to honor those who have died in the line of duty.
This year, three families were honored for their relatives who died last year: correctional officers James Jackson Jr., Timothy Johnson, and William Sullivan. They worked at different Florida facilities across the state.
Ricky Dixon, secretary of the FDC, spoke about the risks that law enforcement takes every shift.
“As we know, this is one of the toughest jobs in public safety and it carries real risks every single day,” Dixon said. “Each day our staff put themselves in harm’s way to keep Florida safe and today is a powerful reminder of that. ”
The Memorial Wreath presented at the procession represents the total 107 officers and employees who have died in the line of duty.
