It’s a big moment for South Florida soccer on Saturday as Inter Miami is set to play its first match in its brand-new stadium in Miami’s Freedom Park.
Inter Miami signed a deal with Brazilian financial services company Nu, which will have the naming rights for the team’s new stadium located in Miami Freedom Park.
For many fans, it’s a moment they’ve been waiting years for, and the wait is finally over after years of planning, building and anticipation.
“This is a stadium that was born out of a dream six years ago,” said Jorge Mas, Inter Miami managing owner. “We didn’t have a club for us its important, and it was always our dream to build a special football stadium.”
Built just steps from Miami International Airport, the 26,700-seat venue is expected to be packed as fans pour in for the historic opener.
“Hopefully, this will be the home where we lift a significant amount of trophies, as you know, that’s what we aspire to, we want to win,” Mas said.
In the days leading up, season ticket holders got a sneak peek and were able to check out the 11,000 square foot team store, walk the concourse and take in that first view of the pitch.
“It’s finally here in Miami, you know, it was a haul to get to Fort Lauderdale, at the end, it’s finally here, and we’re super excited,” William Drew said.
“I’m telling you, everyone is gonna love this stadium, it’s impressive, honestly, it’s one of the best stadiums in the league,” Gabriel Gratzer said.
And tonight, all eyes will be on one player, team captain Lionel Messi.
The stadium even features a section named after him, something that is rarely seen for an active player, but a sign of just how much he’s meant to this team and this city.
Behind the scenes, crews have been working around the clock, putting on final touches, and when the gates open, it’s expected to be a loud, electric, and emotional opening night.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
