FAMU President Marva Johnson shared a statement on the FAMU Facebook page.
“The Florida A&M University family mourns the devastating loss of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer — a proud Rattler whose life was a testament to what this institution stands for. She broke barriers as the first Black and Haitian-American woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission, and she did so with the kind of purpose and servant’s heart that defines the best of FAMU. Her commitment to environmental justice, to her community, and to the people she served reflected the excellence we endeavor to cultivate in every student who walks through our doors.
Bowen was reelected in 2024 and appointed to serve a second, one-year term as vice mayor in November, per the Associated Press.
“Nancy was not just an alumna. She was a living example of FAMU’s promise in action. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues on the Coral Springs Commission, and all who loved her. The world needed more of Nancy, and we are lesser for her absence,” Johnson said.
The Coral Springs community, friends and family gathered in front of City Hall Friday to honor and remember her life.
