As Florida heat intensifies, so does the goal to protect workers from it—and coalitions from Immokalee and Miami tell that story in Tampa this April.
On Thursday, April 23, the Tampa Community Church will host a screening for the documentary, “Without Shade, Without Rest.”
The documentary follows the story of two organizations’ shared goals for safe outdoor labor in Florida, “in the wake of the hottest year on record.”
While the Coalition of Immokalee Workers established heat standards in its Fair Food Program to create a safer framework for labor conditions, WeCount!’s “Que Calor” campaign in Miami pressed the city to mandate heat protections for outdoor laborers.
While the coalitions approached their goals in different ways—and miles apart from each other—the documentary also follows their collaborative effort to push for state regulations.
The documentary was produced by Six Eye Films, a team co-founded by journalists José Jesús Zaragoza and Max Maldonado.
According to Six Eyes’ site, the team “makes documentaries exploring critical issues in Florida, with a keen interest in telling stories about the American South and how its past seeks to reckon with a new future.”
A Q&A panel with filmmakers and featured workers will follow the screening.
The screening of Without Shade, Without Rest happening Thursday, April 23 at Tampa Community Church is open to all and starts at 6 p.m.
