Losing against two quality opponents during a long-distance road trip wouldn’t have been disastrous for the Colorado women’s lacrosse team.

But freshman Rowan Edson made certain it didn’t get to that point.

The 15th-ranked Buffaloes salvaged a split of their two-game trip through Florida, using Edson’s putback goal midway through the extra session to earn a 10-9 overtime victory at Jacksonville on Monday.

With the match tied 9-9 at the end of regulation, CU’s Teagan Ryan fired a shot that was turned away by Jacksonville goalie Brookelynn Hodgin. But Hodgin was unable to secure the ball, giving Edson a chance to scoop-and-score and send the Buffs back to Boulder with a victory.

CU (8-3) suffered a 9-7 loss at No. 5 Florida on Saturday. The Buffs entered Monday’s match at No. 16 in the RPI, while Jacksonville stood at No. 34. The Dolphins had been unbeaten (7-0) at home and had won nine consecutive home matches dating back to last season.

The Buffs led 5-3 at halftime but Jacksonville dominated the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead going into the fourth. The Dolphins took the lead on a goal by Jessica Giller with 9 minutes, 36 seconds remaining, but the Buffs evened the score just 2:04 later on a goal by Rachel Kennedy. The 9-9 score held until Edson’s overtime winner.

The Buffs outshot Jacksonville 26-19, but the Dolphins owned a 12-11 edge in shots on goal. CU goalie Elena Oh finished with six saves.

“Jacksonville is just a tough team,” CU head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said in a release. “They’re scrappy, they’re aggressive, they’re talented on both sides and they’re really good at the draw. We knew (it would be) a battle, even from a possession standpoint of giving ourselves opportunities and that’s what it ended up being. For our group, I’m proud of them for finding a way to get it done — that was the most important part. At the end of the day, we were able to stay composed enough and committed enough to just make one more play than they did.”

CU returns home to resume Big 12 Conference play on Saturday against Cincinnati (noon, ESPN+).
