An 18-year-old St. Petersburg man turned himself in April 1 in connection with a deadly arson fire that killed a young woman and severely burned her sister last month, police said.
Charles Chambliss III faces charges of felony murder and three counts of attempted felony murder, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
Detectives issued a warrant for Chambliss on March 30, and he surrendered to police on April 1.
The fire broke out shortly after 3:30 a.m. on March 22 at a home on Neptune Drive SE in the Coquina Key neighborhood. Police said Chambliss set fire to a car under the carport, and the flames spread to the home, where four people were inside.
Angelina Anderson, 18, died from her injuries. Her sister, Ashley Nero, 35, remains hospitalized in stable condition with serious burns, police said. Nero’s two sons, a teenager and an 11-year-old, were also home but were not hurt.
Chambliss lives nearby and knows the family, according to police.
In a related arrest, Chambliss’ father, Charles Chambliss Jr., 46, was charged with tampering with physical evidence. Police said he threw away clothing items in a dumpster behind a closed business on March 27, knowing they could be relevant to the arson investigation.
