Another domino has fallen in the coaches getting fired world that could affect FSU in a negative way. LSU fired Brian Kelly late Sunday night, joining Florida, UCLA, and Penn State among several other schools with head coaching vacancies.

There is some smoke that Texas could open if Steve Sarkisian decides to bolt to the NFL.

Florida State administrators decided to hold off on firing Mike Norvell after the loss to Stanford last week. Many Florida State fans see it as a sign of weakness, but the reality is they’re in a catch-22 situation. FSU will have to pay Mike Norvell over 50 million dollars if they fire him at the end of the season. They’d have to add another 25 million or more to buy out the rest of the staff contracts, and more money to hire a new coaching staff.

FSU is a top 15-20 job, but programs in the SEC and B1G would be more attractive to coaches due to the money disparity between those two conferences and schools in the ACC.

If FSU fired Mike Norvell and hired another school from the G5 league, fans wouldn’t be happy. Some FSU fans want Jimbo Fisher back, and others want James Franklin. There isn’t a true, realistic slam dunk hire for FSU to make. Additionally, even if FSU targets a coach, that coach must also want to come to FSU.

I know FSU fans want the FSU administration to do something. I thought FSU should have been fired last week too, but also understand not making a huge financial decision based on emotions.

LSU firing Brian Kelly likely means a reputable coach will take that job, which means that’s a reputable coach that won’t come to FSU. It could ultimately work out for FSU if they have patience as other dominoes continue to fall.

Right now, it looks like they might be stuck with Mike Norvell. However, there is a world where FSU could benefit from waiting to let Mike Norvell go at the end of the year. It just depends on if other coaching jobs open or not. It’s probably smarter to wait it out than make a rash decision based on what other colleges do. Some FSU fans will say FSU can’t afford to keep Mike Norvell, but they can’t afford to fire him and get the next coaching hire wrong either.
