Plans for a new Walmart Supercenter in Cape Coral, located between Burnt Store Road and Chiquita Boulevard, have sparked excitement and concern among residents. Donna Tyndall and her grandson, Levi, are thrilled about the new addition. “Levi, say ‘Yes, say we need Walmart here!'” Tyndall said. Currently, Cape Coral has one Walmart on Del Prado Boulevard and two neighborhood markets, leaving those living further north in what some describe as a retail desert. “If you live in that northwest or slightly up to Burnt Store, Charlotte County, there’s nowhere to go,” said Janna McCuistion, a Cape Coral resident. The project is still under review, but traffic is the number one concern, especially with new apartments and the Cape Coral Grove project gearing up across the street. “The traffic might be really bad at the intersection,” McCuistion said. The developer is collaborating with the Grove Town Center to obtain approval from the Florida Department of Transportation for a new traffic light at the intersection. However, not everyone is convinced. “I’d like to see a Costco,” said Tracy Bean. Nick Comerford, a realtor at Cape Premier Realty, said, “People need more wholesale options here, cheaper prices.”Comerford explained that retail is racing to catch up with the rapid growth in the area. “In the last few years, there’s been a lot of building, and here in Northwest Cape Coral, there’s still the most land available, so I think that’s why we’ve been seeing so much building up here,” he said. The city anticipates construction to begin within a few months, following the installation of the FDOT traffic signal.
