JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Jacksonville woman says she was sexually assaulted in her hotel room last week and that police did not include the assault in their report.
Amy Gurganus says she was shocked to discover that a police report she filed did not mention the sexual assault she says she told them about.
“I was bleeding and extremely sore; I could barely walk. My arms were bruised, and my neck was sore,” Gurganus said.
Gurganus was staying at the Suburban Studios near Camp Lejeune on April 3rd and says she was sitting outside when a woman approached her.
She says they were talking and that’s when she was offered to try the woman’s drink. Gurganus says she noticed a group of around 10 men grilling before she was approached.
Gurganus says the last thing she remembers before she woke up the next morning was taking two sips of the drink.
She says she called 911 when she discovered she wasn’t clothed and noticed some of her things were missing. She believes she was roofied and told the police she was sexually assaulted.
“When the police officer came, he collected no evidence from that room. None. Nothing,” Gurganus said.
She says all he did was get a statement and then take pictures of her arms.
Gurganus says she then took a rideshare for treatment. She says she did not have a rape kit taken because she felt “embarrassed and ashamed.”
The police report doesn’t say anything about sexual assault in it, something that caught Gurganus off guard because she says she had reported it to the officer. Instead, the report just said larceny and what was stolen from her hotel room.
Gurganus says she made several attempts to talk with the Jacksonville Police Department and was assigned an investigator on Tuesday, but wonders if it’s too late anyway.
“If it can happen to me, it’s going to happen to someone else. And it could be worse next time. I’ve got bruises; I felt like I had been choked. They could have killed me,” Gurganus said.
Gurganus says she requested to speak with the manager at the hotel she was staying at, but was told she was on vacation. Then she was later told, “This is not the right place for you,” and was escorted out by two police officers.
Gurganus says she is seeking legal representation and plans to file a civil suit against the Jacksonville Police Department and the hotel where she was staying. Jacksonville police denied to comment due to an ongoing investigation.
WITN went to the hotel seeking comment but was told to leave the property.
