A Doral school community is grieving after a car crash claimed the lives of two students.
Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, head of schools at Downtown Doral Charter Schools, identified the teens as Mateo Dávila and Alessia Tucci.
“Our entire community is mourning the unimaginable loss of two of our beloved students,” she wrote in a message. “Our heartfelt sympathies are with their families, friends, faculty and staff at our schools. These students left a lasting impact on everyone who knew them, and they will be deeply missed.”
Doral police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a single-vehicle crash and a car on fire around Northwest 54th Street and 87th Avenue. Two people were found inside and died.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.
School officials said grief counselors will be available on campus to support students and staff in the coming days.
Mateo was a member of the school’s basketball team, according to an Instagram post by the team: “Rest in peace to our beloved player Mateo Davila. You and your family will always be in our heart,” the caption reads.
