PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast are experiencing significant flooding due to severe weather conditions.

CBS12 News has declared Thursday as another weather impact day due to the ongoing threat of more rain.

Vero Beach and Fort Pierce have both shattered their previous rainfall records. Vero Beach set a new record for Wednesday, receiving 1.63 inches of rain. With the ground already saturated, any additional heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, particularly in urban areas and places with poor drainage.

Port St. Lucie closed multiple roads during the day due to flooding. Brittany McNally with the Port St. Lucie Police Department says there are ways to keep drivers safe.

“Use your headlights. There’s a lot of heavy rain that’s been going on these last couple of weeks and days, and reduce those speeds. We do have a lot of congestion and traffic in Port Saint Lucie, so just be mindful, have some patience, reduce those speeds, especially in inclement weather,” said McNally.

One of those closed roads had a minivan stuck in over 6 inches of water. The man who owns the property says accidents like this happen too often.

“The water is obviously too deep, and they still risk it. You know, just because you go faster, it doesn’t mean you’re going to get through. I’ve seen them where the car stalls out and then they open the door and let the water flow right into the car,” said Orlando Salazar.

Salazar said this is the third accident next to his house in the past two year. He voiced his frustration with the lack of action from the city.

“They did come out and redo the sewers on both sides of the street and it still hasn’t made a difference,” Salazar said.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with the greatest concern for flooding affecting the east coast metro areas. Rainfall totals could reach between 1 to 2 inches in some locations, with the possibility of isolated higher amounts.

While showers are expected to decrease overnight, a few could linger along the east coast into early Friday. Residents are advised to stay alert and take precautions to stay safe during this weather event.
