Macon leaders detail plans for Middle Georgia Regional Airport, including new flights starting this summer

New plans at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport are taking flight.

Macon-Bibb leaders announced Thursday the airport is welcoming two new routes to Baltimore and Fort Lauderdale, Florida through Contour Airlines.

Mayor Lester Miller also confirmed Thursday the Baltimore route will replace the current Contour Airlines flight to Washington-Dulles International Airport from Macon.

Contour previously offered flights to Baltimore but replaced them with Dulles in April 2025. Mayor Lester Miller says they’ve made the switch again based on popular demand, and lower than expected numbers of passengers going to the nation’s capitol.

“We thought they were going to be higher, and a lot of people said, ‘Can you bring back BWI?’ So, I think that’s one of the reasons,” Miller said.

Some travelers at the airport Thursday say they’re ready to punch their ticket. Kevin Lind flew from Dulles to judge a dog show in Central Georgia. The Maryland native says he used to take the Baltimore flight, and now he’s looking forward to the well-known route coming back.

“I’m excited about it. I think that like I mentioned, Baltimore is just a little bit easier to get into,” Lind said.

Other travelers are more hesitant to get on board. Karol Anne Wayland flew from Dulles to see her daughter play softball at Mercer. She says Baltimore is more difficult for her to get to, and she’s disappointed to lose the more convenient flight.

“I really hope they can get to a point where there’s more locations,” Wayland said.

The route to the sunshine state is also no stranger to MCN. In 2025, Spirit Airlines announced a route to Fort Lauderdale before pulling out two months later. However, Mayor Miller says he’s confident this new flight won’t get grounded.

“This is an airline that we’ve been dealing with for quite a while and it has a history here Macon, so I don’t see any issues whatsoever there, and we’ll hope to get that this summer,” Miller said.

Miller says these new flights are part of a larger effort to grow the airport. Along with new flights, MCN is also undergoing renovations including $13.4 million dollar guitar shaped terminal and a 700 foot runway extension. He hopes these new routes will also send a message to other airlines and routes still-to-come.

“It also lets airlines know that we’re open for business. We’re willing to work out things, go to new destinations, and I think those are coming in the very near future,” Miller said.

Both routes to Baltimore and Fort Lauderdale begin flights on June 9.
