TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – This week marks National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which recognizes and celebrates 911 dispatchers across the country.
Locally, various agencies like the police, fire and EMS departments will bring food, and thanks to the Consolidated Dispatch Agency, home to dispatchers for all of Leon County.

The CDA’s director, David Odom, says the work of 911 dispatchers often goes under the radar, even though they’re the first to respond to emergencies.
“I think the biggest challenge for our folks here is the unknown, like what’s the outcome, but the thing that drives them every day is service to others,” Odom said. “That is their belief is that in their core, they’re here to serve this community and serve others.”
Odom also points out that dispatchers don’t often get closure. As soon as the first responders are on scene, they’re onto the next call.
He says that only adds to the stress that dispatchers at the CDA face.
