The island community is invited to mark Earth Day with an educational, family-friendly event.

The city of Sanibel will present its 1st Annual Earth Fair on April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sanibel Community Park. Free and open to all, it will feature local organizations, activities, prizes and more.

City Chief Resilience Officer Ashlee Painter reported that April 22 is recognized as Earth Day.

“This island is already so environmentally conscious,” she said. “This kind of brings home, in a fun way, all the different things that we do as a city, but also the organizations around the island.”

It will promote the environment and sustainability actions being taken, plus actions that can be taken.

Along with the city, the participating organizations will include the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium, Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge, Island Water Association, LCEC, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, SanCap Resilience, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), Sanibel Vegetation Committee, Solar United Neighbors, and UF/IFAS Extension Florida Master Gardener Program.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the work that the organizations are doing, with educational materials provided. They can also learn how they can help protect the environment.

There will be fun, interactive games for the whole family.

“Each one is going to have their own coloring sheetings or games or hands-on activities,” Painter said of the participating organizations. “We’ll have a little Kids Zone with some crafts.”

Attendees can also take part in yard games, like cornhole.

There will be self-guided nature walks.

“People can do a clean up if they choose to,” she added. “We’ll have materials there if people want to walk along the trails and clean up.”

Attendees can pick up an event passport and get it stamped at each of the tables and booths. Once they have filled out their passport, they can then turn it in for a shot at about a dozen eco-friendly prizes.

“We have things like a compost bin, energy-saving devices or water-saving devices,” Painter said, adding that there are gift cards for the SCCF’s Native Landscapes & Garden Center and more.

The community is encouraged to come out and participate.

“Learn a lot about the island and what is being done here. Whether it’s a city program or project or one from the organizations, there’s so much going on,” she said. “And just be outside and enjoy nature.”
