SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A family is devastated and heartbroken after a Florida mom was struck by a truck and killed while apparently walking along State Road 46 while carrying a car seat with her infant inside of it.

The infant was not hurt and is now in the care of family members, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

What we know

The crash was reported shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, near the intersection of State Road 46 and Jungle Road, FHP said.

FHP said a 24-year-old woman was walking westbound on State Road 46 and carrying a car seat with an infant inside of it.

The driver of a 2008 Ford F-350 pickup truck, a 58-year-old man from Winter Springs, was also traveling westbound and struck the woman, who died at the scene.

FHP said the infant was not hurt and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Family members identified the woman to FOX 35 as Destiny Gonzalez. The family said she was the mother of a 9-month-old and a 1 ½-year-old and that her children were her entire world.

FHP has not yet confirmed the woman’s identity.

Family members did not want to talk on camera on Tuesday, but did share some photos of Gonzalez with us.

They’ve asked for prayers during the tragic time.

More questions than answers

What they’re saying

Family members said they are unsure why Gonzalez was in Geneva nor why she was walking along SR-46 as she does not live near that area.

They described Gonzalez as a devoted mother of two young girls, saying her 9-month-old and 1½-year-old children were “her entire world.” They said the family is “absolutely heartbroken” and asked for prayers as they cope with the loss.

“I just can’t imagine 3 a.m. being out at night walking with a baby,” a neighbor said.

What’s next

FHP said the cause of the crash was still under investigation.
