Speaker of the House Mike Johnson Tuesday said he believes south Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick should be expelled from Congress.Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of improperly accepting $5 million in disaster relief funds and using the money for her political campaigns. Last month, the House Ethics Committee found 25 of the allegations against Cherfilus-McCormick had been proven.”The ethics committee has gone through all of its processes, and they’ve found some alarming facts,” Johnson said. “I think the facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled.” Cherfilus-McCormick is also facing federal criminal charges related to the same accusations.A federal judge Tuesday granted her request to postpone the trial, which is now scheduled for Feb. 8, 2027. The House Ethics Committee has scheduled a hearing for April 21 to decide on potential sanctions against Cherfilus-McCormick. A vote to expel her from Congress is expected, requiring a two-thirds majority to remove a sitting member.
