Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said during an interview Monday that the Federal Reserve should “wait and see” before adjusting interest rates — and then appeared to clarify those remarks Tuesday by calling on central bankers to cut rates after monitoring economic conditions.
“No, no, no. If you notice, I said that they could, they could observe before they cut rates. So … the impetus here is they still, they will need to cut rates,” Bessent told Reuters and other news outlets Tuesday when asked if his comments a day earlier had signaled a shift by the Trump administration.
