NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — Questions remain in the death investigation of an elderly couple in Neptune Beach over the weekend.
Saturday night, law enforcement said they responded to a Neptune Beach home to find two 77-year-olds and their dog dead inside.
“Shock—everybody’s in disbelief that this happened. It had to be an accident; it had to be,” neighbor Mike Miller said.
Miller lives just a few houses down from where the couple were found.
“Sad. Very disheartening,” Miller told First Coast News.
It happened in the area of North Street, between 2nd and 3rd streets. Neptune Beach police and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were both at the scene after the victims were reportedly found by a family member who went to check in on them.
“They taped off the streets, and it was just one police car after another,” Miller said.
JSO said that no foul play is currently suspected.
“This continues to be an active investigation in our homicide unit – as the deaths are both undetermined,” JSO said in a statement Monday. “We are working with our partners at the ME’s office, and as soon as the cause of death has been determined, we will be able to provide further information.”
As for people like Mike — the absence of the two neighbors will be felt.
“They’d come by and hang out with us for like 20 minutes a pop. They were good people. I’m going to miss them,” Miller said.
At this time, Neptune Beach police say JSO is leading the investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
