The Hialeah Thoroughbreds will take on the Mater Academy Charter Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Hialeah is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They skirted past Varela 5-4. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Thoroughbreds as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Matthew Gonzalez made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Hialeah is 2-1 when Gonzalez allows one or fewer hits, but 7-9 otherwise. Gonzalez was also solid in the batter’s box, going 2-for-3 with one run.

In other pitching news, Jude Fernandez got the start for Hialeah and what a start it was: he struck out nine batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That’s the most strikeouts Fernandez has posted since back in March.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Jay Sobrino, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Miguel Reyes was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Meanwhile, while Mater Academy Charter put up plenty of runs on Tuesday, the same can’t be said for Everglades. The Lions put the hurt on the Gators with a sharp 15-0 win. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by six runs or more this season.

Gabriel Grandillo looked comfortable as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn’t given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mater Academy Charter let Andre Suarez and Mitchell Fernandez run wild. Suarez went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Fernandez went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Suarez has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he’s played. The team also got some help courtesy of Rafael Govin, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.

Mater Academy Charter always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Everglades only posted an OBP of .071.

Hialeah’s victory bumped their record up to 9-10. As for Mater Academy Charter, their win bumped their record up to 20-5.

Hialeah might still be hurting after the 10-3 loss they got from Mater Academy Charter in their previous matchup back in May of 2022. Can the Thoroughbreds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.
