FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—A new pedestrian safety device on State Road 82 is operational now.
The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon is located just west of Ben Street on State Road 82, also known as Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. The device is designed to help pedestrians safely cross higher-speed roadways at midblock crossings and uncontrolled intersections.
The beacon head consists of two red lenses above a single yellow lens. The lenses remain dark until a pedestrian pushes the call button to activate the beacon.
Once activated, the beacon initiates a yellow-to-red lighting sequence consisting of flashing and steady lights. This sequence directs motorists to slow down and come to a stop, providing the right-of-way to the pedestrian to safely cross the roadway before going dark again.
