TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Children’s Services Council of Leon County is stepping in to help ensure Head Start centers stay open.
CSC Leon announced a $300,000 allocation to four Head Start centers in Tallahassee.
These funds will help around 320 children and their families at Mabry Street Family & Child Enrichment Center, Head Start at Pineview, Louise B. Royal Head Start, and South City Head Start Center.
CSC Leon’s contribution will fund Head Start centers for the next month.
The organization announced it would pay for staffing and meals at those four centers.
This comes amid a pause in federal funding that was going to have Head Start centers closing their doors.
The Capital Area Community Action Agency, which oversees Head Start programs across north Florida, announced last week that it would close until a budget was passed.
However, over the weekend, CACAA said all Leon County Head Start locations would reopen on Tuesday.
Cecka Rose Green, Executive Director of CSC Leon, said the council is fortunate to be able to provide these funds.
“We were fortunate our council actually in the fiscal year 25/26 budget approved some match funding for Head Start and Early Head Start, while we expected to provide in a way to be used for operations, we also had the ability to go ahead and provide that given the federal shutdown and, effectively, the freeze on the money that would be used for their program,” Green said.
CACAA praised CSC Leon’s quick response. The interim chief executive officer said it is especially important to continue to serve families.
“With CSC Leon’s support, we can continue serving our children without disruption and maintain the quality programming our community relies upon,” Nina Singleton Self said.
