Miami seems to have forgotten that old proverb stating that honesty is the best policy. A new study has crowned the Magic City the most dishonest place in the United States, giving it a lofty (or dubious) score of 8.76 out of 10. That’s not exactly the kind of ranking you frame on the wall, but it does make for a pretty entertaining snapshot of modern city life.

The research, conducted by online casino DuelBits, looked at everything from property crime and fraud to Google searches for video game cheats and affair websites. Yep, Miamians were caught red-handed by their search history.

The city posted a property crime rate of about 3,500 per 100,000 residents and a fraud rate of 2,100, tying for the highest in the country. That alone would raise eyebrows, but the digital behavior is where things get more colorful.

For instance, Miami residents rack up more than 158 monthly searches per 100,000 people for video game cheat sites like WeMod and CheatEngine. Are these all the gamers who insist they’re “just really good at the game”?

Romance seems to be a bit shady in Miami too. Searches for affair-related platforms such as Ashley Madison and hidden messaging apps hit over 18,000 per month, giving Miami one of the highest rates in the country. Love may be in the air, but apparently so is plausible deniability.

And if that weren’t enough, Miami also logs a high number of spam calls and a noticeable rate of catfishing victims. Add in a slightly above-average risk of employee theft and a statewide divorce rate tied for the highest in the U.S., and you’ve got a city that seems to keep both private investigators and phone scammers very busy.

Of course, Miami isn’t alone in its less-than-honest tendencies. Atlanta, Las Vegas, Seattle and Portland round out the top five. Apparently, what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas, at least not when it comes to data.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, places like Wichita and Omaha are minding their business, earning reputations as some of the most honest cities in the country. Suspiciously wholesome?

Even within Florida, there’s some variation. Jacksonville lands in the top ten most dishonest cities, though it shows slightly less interest in cheating, both romantic and digital.

So what does all this mean? Is Miami truly a hotbed of deception, or just a place where human quirks show up more clearly in the data? Probably a bit of both.
