Police said the suspect was attempting to break into the home.
SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Pete police are investigating after they say a homeowner shot a man who attempted to break into a home.
It happened just after midnight Saturday when a 46-year-old man crashed his car in the Historic Kenwood area. Following the crash, the man ran from the vehicle and entered the backyard of a home on 2nd Avenue N.
The suspect then attempted to break into the home through a rear entrance. The homeowner was awakened by the noise and ordered the man to leave.
As the suspect continued his attempts to enter the home, the homeowner shot at him.
Police were dispatched to the area in response to gunshots being fired. Once on scene they found the suspect with a gunshot wound.
He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The suspect is not being identified at this time pending next of kin notification.
There were three adults and one child inside the home at the time of the incident. Police say no one else was injured.
It’s unclear what caused the suspect to crash his car.
Police say the homeowner is not facing any charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
