A Miami County woman was found dead near a Madison County creek over the weekend.

West Jefferson police announced the woman was identified as 52-year-old Cynthia Wood, of Covington, on Monday, April 20.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wood’s death, but there is no indication there’s an ongoing threat to the public, police said.

Officers responded to the Little Darby Creek area near Martin Avenue and North Franklin Street around 5:11 p.m. Saturday, April 18, after kayakers reported a woman was partially in the water and appeared to be deceased, according to a press release.

Officers and the Jefferson Twp. Fire Department found a woman, later identified as Wood, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were multiple embankments leading down to the creek, estimated to be about 50 feet high, near where Wood was found. Detectives recovered multiple items as potential evidence, including clear bags containing a whiter powdery substance believed to controlled substances, police said.

Wood’s vehicle was also found nearby and is being processed for evidence.
