Jacksonville’s Court Street to have iconic bricks replaced with dyed concrete after compromise

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Court Street bricks are now gone as part of a planned downtown revitalization project for the City of Jacksonville.

The current construction is set to take four months to complete as a way of making the area more accessible and safer.

City leaders said they listened to concerns from local business owners about how removing the bricks would take away the area’s iconic look, and they have decided on a stamped-dyed concrete solution.

Jacksonville City Manager Joshua Ray said this solution is a great comprise, leaving the brick color while still accomplishing the City’s goals.

“This is a true, successful project in terms of how downtown will revitalize,” Ray said. “Whether it’s downtown or anywhere else in the community, we encourage local businesses and property owners to engage with staff and council to make sure that we’re hearing the comments and that we’re able to respond to some of their needs.”

While construction is underway, local businesses are still planning on events to get more foot traffic.
