FLORIDA, USA — Florida is seeing some of the worst drought conditions in years as the month of April marks the peak of wildfire season.
Fire officials believe conditions could make this year one of the worst seasons in more than a decade, as the Florida Forest Service (FFS) has already responded to more than 1,600 wildfires in the first three months of 2026.
For perspective, that’s more than half of what crews typically see in an entire year, which averages around 2,400 to 2,500 fires.
As of Wednesday afternoon, FFS is reporting dozens of active wildfires across the state, mostly in Florida’s northern counties.
The Tampa Bay area is less active, with a handful of fires reported in Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties.

Florida’s drought conditions
Florida reached 100% drought coverage for the first time in late February since record-keeping began in 2000.
Just this week, weather officials issued a red flag warning for the entire Tampa Bay region.
Fire officials point to a combination of factors fueling the unusually active start to the year, including a prolonged drought lasting more than a year, freezes earlier this winter that killed vegetation, dry debris left behind from past hurricanes and winds that can quickly spread flames
“All the conditions are very ripe to have a very active fire season,” Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson said.
With risk rising, officials are asking for residents’ help, urging them to take prevention seriously.
That includes clearing dry debris like leaves and pine needles from yards and gutters, fully extinguishing any flames from grills, bonfires or cigarettes, and reporting smoke or suspicious activity immediately.
