TALLAHASSE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Griffin Heights neighborhood is one step closer to having its own grocery store at the corner of Alabama and Harlem Streets.
“We need this here at this time, in this economy,” Lachanthia Hall said. She is the vice president for the Griffin Heights Neighborhood Association.
Hall says the group wants a say in how the store functions. “We want to operate this store,” Hall said. “We have located people within our association – stakeholders – people that have experience that want to make this community grocery store work, and also let the Griffin Heights Neighborhood Association be a part of that.”

Currently, the physical location is built, and Hall said the association submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) to be in charge of store operations.
Separately, Hall said having a grocery store in her neighborhood is critical for people to have better access to food.
“It’s very important to address some of the food desert issues, the insecurities that this zip code has faced over the years, and this grocery store can help with some of those needs,” she said.
She also pointed out that the prices will be reasonable for people living nearby. “Affordability is important so that families can put food on their table,” Hall said. “Where families don’t have to travel across town. They can be able to just walk to this grocery store and have everything they need.”
City leaders broke ground on the store last September, and Hall said they’re hoping the grocery market will be open this summer.
