The Cincinnati Reds offense exploded on Tuesday night as the Reds topped the Tampa Bay Rays 12-6. The victory sealed a series win for the visiting team but this afternoon Cincinnati will be going for a sweep and will look to extend their winning streak to six games. Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:10pm ET.

Brandon Williamson

The lefty has been alternating tough and strong starts so far this season. But his last two outings he’s struggled a lot in the throwing strikes department as he’s walked 10 batters and hit two others with just five strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched.

The sample size is small for Williamson this year but his platoon splits have been big and they’ve been weird. Left-handed hitters have barely faced him but two of their three hits against him have left the yard. Righties haven’t hit much at all, but they’ve walked a lot and are making a lot of contact against him.

Nick Martinez

After having a terrible spring training (14.49 ERA, 29 hits in 13.2 innings), Martinez flipped the regular season switch when things began to matter. He’s allowed just six earned runs over 22.0 innings in his four starts. Tampa Bay won the first three of those starts but they did lose the last one against Pittsburgh.

The platoon splits last season for Martinez didn’t show much difference. Lefties struck out a lot more than righties did, but there was just a 19 point advantage in batting average for righties and that carried over into slugging.

Jose Trevino to rehab on Friday

Mark Sheldon of Reds.com is reporting that Jose Trevino will catch for five innings on Friday with the Dayton Dragons on a rehab assignment as he comes back from a back injury.

The Reds are hitting dingers

Do you know who leads the National League in home runs? If you guessed Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart (along with four others) then you would be correct. The Reds sluggers each have eight home runs, which is best in the NL. Overall, those two have helped Cincinnati his 27 home runs this season, which is tied for 7th in all of baseball right now.

Sal Stewart’s breakout

Over at CBS Sports Chris Towers wrote about Sal Stewart’s breakout so far this season. The article is fantasy baseball slanted, but a lot of what he talks about applies to real games that count in the standings. Stewart’s hot start has already made a big impact on his projection for the rest of the season.
