ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Police announced Wednesday additional charges against a St. Petersburg couple accused of abusing a child in their care.

The investigation began after a 1-month-old with “multiple unexplained bruises” on his head, as well as scratches and lacerations across his body, was found unresponsive.

The boy’s sole caregivers, Gabriella Daniels, 22, and Ashton Kurant, 21, were arrested Thursday after he died at the hospital.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the new charges involve a second child who was also in the couple’s care.

The 15-month-old girl had significant diaper rashes and sores on her legs and feet from being kept in a playpen for extended periods of time, police said.

Officers said the house was “filthy,” and the child’s mattress was soaked in urine and insects. The child is now receiving care in a safe environment.

The couple now face additional charges for aggravated child abuse (unlawful caging) and neglect (environmental hazards).
