TAMPA — “Alt Tampa,” a new exhibition by Jesi Cason, will be on view April 29 through June 14 at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, 1630 E. Seventh Ave., Tampa.
An artist reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition is presented by FMoPA in collaboration with St. Petersburg Month of Photography. It features the work of Cason, SPMOP’s 2025 Photo Laureate.
“Alt Tampa” shifts focus away from the familiar image of Tampa Bay and toward the communities that have long existed just outside the spotlight. Through striking portraiture, Cason documents individuals connected to the region’s alternative scenes shaped by music, style, and a shared commitment to self-expression. Her work honors individuals who embody an alternative history of the region while confronting the growing pressures of development that threaten these spaces. Vivid and deeply personal, the exhibition celebrates the courage to live authentically and to define identity on one’s own terms.
As with many exhibitions that challenge dominant narratives, “Alt Tampa” has sparked conversation within the community. Some have expressed discomfort with its subject matter or questioned whether this side of Tampa should be represented. FMoPA believes this response underscores the importance of the exhibition. By presenting “Alt Tampa,” FMoPA continues its commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives and fostering dialogue through the photographic arts.
In addition to the reception, an artist talk with Cason will be presented on Sunday, May 31, from 1 to 2 p.m.
The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is dedicated to exhibiting important photographic art as central to contemporary life and culture. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free for children and members. General admission is $12.
