Miami-Dade Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis wants to provide flags to county residents in advance of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
There are moments in American history when something greater rises above politics.
We all remember the days after the Sept. 11 attacks. What followed, especially on Sept. 12, was unity. Flags appeared everywhere. Neighbors stood together. Our country moved forward with a shared sense of purpose and pride.
That spirit still lives in the American people.
Today, as Miami-Dade prepares to mark 250 years of American independence, we have an opportunity to bring that same sense of unity into our communities in a real and lasting way.
That is why I am launching Flags Across Miami-Dade.
In partnership with American Legion Post 98, this program will provide American flags to residents, starting with in District 6, so families can display them proudly at their homes. It is simple and meaningful. It invites every household to take part in honoring this country right where they live.
The American flag represents the best of who we are. It carries the stories of every generation that has built this country. It belongs to every American; every background; every belief; every family that has worked, sacrificed, served and contributed to the strength of this nation.
It reflects a country shaped by many hands and many journeys, all united by a shared commitment to freedom and opportunity.
In Miami-Dade, that meaning runs deep. Our community is built by families who came here in search of a better life, from every corner of this nation and from across the world, drawn by the promise of freedom and opportunity.
My own family fled Cuba after losing everything to a communist regime. They arrived in this country with faith, determination, and a deep appreciation for the opportunities America provides.
That story lives across our neighborhoods.
Every flag raised is a statement of pride. A reminder of where we came from and what we are building together. A visible expression of gratitude and belief in this country.
As we approach this historic anniversary, we have a chance to come together around what unites us. We share a love for this country. We share a commitment to our families and our communities. We share a belief in the promise of America.
