Smoky odor prompts Orlando-bound flight to be diverted to Milwaukee

An Orlando-bound Delta flight that departed the Twin Cities early Sunday evening was diverted to Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport. A Delta spokesperson says a “smoky odor” was detected on Delta flight 2309 after it took from from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport around 6:45 p.m. After the flight crew declared emergency for priority handling from Air Traffic Control, the spokesperson says the flight landed uneventfully before being met by a fire truck at the gate. The cause of the odor is still being investigated. The Milwaukee Fire Department tells WISN 12 News there were a couple of units that were put on standby at the airport just after 8 p.m., but they were cleared by 8:45 p.m. Delta officials say none of the 128 customers on board the plane were hurt, adding that they were was able to “deplane normally.” In a statement, Delta said that “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, and we apologize for their delay in travel.”

An Orlando-bound Delta flight that departed the Twin Cities early Sunday evening was diverted to Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport.
Airport officials tell WISN 12 News that Delta Flight 2309, which took off from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport just before 6:45 p.m., landed safely and was able to taxi to the gate.
Currently, no information has been released as to why the plane was diverted. The Milwaukee Fire Department tells WISN 12 News there were a couple of units that were put on standby at the airport just after 8 p.m., but they were cleared by 8:45 p.m.
No one was injured, according to the airport officials, who said any other questions would need to be answered by Delta.
