JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Jacksonville trash collection truck caught fire, with the city saying it likely was caused by improperly disposed lithium batteries.
Firefighters were called to the Cook Out on Marine Boulevard early Friday morning after trash in the truck caught fire.

They are still trying to determine exactly where the batteries were dumped into the truck. The city says lithium batteries can catch fire when they are cracked, punctured, or become compressed inside a collection truck.
They say the batteries are banned from the landfill and should never be placed in your trash or recycling. Instead they should be dropped off at a battery recycling center.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire and the city’s insurance adjuster is still working to determine how much damage was done to the trash truck.
