Wildfires in Georgia and Florida continue to burn thousands of acres more than a week after the blazes began.

Drought conditions in the Southeast U.S. gave rise to the still-growing inferno last week, prompting Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to declare a state of emergency for 91 counties on April 22 and both states to issue burn bans.

In Florida, the state is currently plagued with nearly 100 wildfires that have burned across 15,445 acres as of Tuesday, April 28, according to the Florida Forest Service.

In Georgia, the Highway 82 fire in Atkinson, first reported on April 20, had burned 22,600 acres as of Tuesday, April 28, according to USA TODAY’s wildfire tracker. Meanwhile, the Pineland Road wildfire, burning since April 18, was 23% contained at 32,541 acres affected. The two large fires caused a collective $9 million in damages and are continuing to grow.

An April 28 update posted by the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office, where the Highway 82 fire is located, said the blaze was 32% contained as of 10:30 a.m. ET, with more than 400 personnel on the ground fighting the flames.

“Crews had a very good night last night around the Hwy 82 Fire with excellent humidity recovery and lower temperatures. Engines were out overnight, extinguishing hot spots around structures and dozer lines,” said the statement. However, “Warm weather (has returned), which will continue to dry vegetation across the fire air,” the notice also said, adding that light southeasterly winds are expected to continue blowing.
