TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Students at Bond Elementary had a special lunch on Tuesday, eating the vegetables they grew from their own classrooms.
Students were given a “grow kit” in partnership with Sunrise Rotary and Legacy Greens Farm in Quincy to learn about healthy eating and growing your own produce.
“I never made microgreens at my house,” said second-grade student Anjalic. “That was fun and some of them were spicy.”
The vegetables were grown in plastic containers, and the students were responsible for maintaining them during the past week. “When it started to grow, we were so happy,” Anjalic said.

With help from volunteers Tuesday, kids were able to harvest their arugula, broccoli, cabbage and other greens to eat in a fresh wrap with meat and cheese.
“Over the past week, I think they’ve just been able to witness the process and the importance and the excitement of seeing the growth, and now being able to harvest it and eat it,” Melanie Quinton with Sunrise Rotary said. “I think my favorite quote was ‘This is better than a McDonald’s wrap,’ so that’s progress.”
Quinton said they hope students will take the lesson of healthy eating and growing your own produce with them for years to come.
“One week of just seeing a seed grow into something they actually got to taste, and like, I think is pretty awesome,” Quinton said. “I hope they can use it in many other ways in the future.”
