America is turning 250 this July Fourth, and Tampa has decided that if you’re going to celebrate a quarter-millennium of democratic ideals, food trucks, and the occasional national identity crisis, you’d better do it right. Enter Liberty by the Bay, the city’s free, family-friendly, aggressively patriotic blowout at Julian B. Lane Park on July 4, running from 4-9:30 pm along the Tampa waterfront.

Let’s be clear about what’s happening here. Tampa is going full throttle on this one. The city is sending 250 drones into the sky to honor 250 years of American independence. That’s one drone per year, which is either deeply symbolic or the most elaborate math flex in local government history. Probably both.

Here’s the rundown

The party kicks off at 4 pm along the Tampa Riverwalk with a lineup that would make any city jealous. There’s a Kids Zone, live bands rotating throughout the afternoon and evening, DJs, food trucks, and a beer garden, because patriotism and hydration are not mutually exclusive. At around 5:15 pm, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay hosts a Patriotic Pet Show, where festively dressed animals will presumably remind you that dogs, at minimum, have always been worth celebrating.

Then, at approximately 6 pm, the Friends of the Riverwalk bring a water ski show to the Hillsborough River, which is exactly the kind of sentence that reminds you Tampa is doing something hella fun with its waterfront. The Glazer Children’s Museum follows that up at roughly 6:45 pm with the Kids Liberty Procession, where children can wear patriotic costumes spanning American history, or just make one on-site, which is perhaps the most American approach imaginable.

The headlining spectacle begins at 9 pm with that 250-drone light show, followed immediately by fireworks over the Hillsborough River. And if you’d like to spread out along the Riverwalk, additional fireworks displays are scheduled at Armature Works and Jackson’s Bistro on Harbour Island, with a Patriotic Boat Parade organized by the Friends of the Riverwalk rounding things out on the water.

Mayor Jane Castor has called this “a once-in-a-generation moment,” and that’s honestly hard to argue with. America won’t turn 250 again, presumably, and if your city sits on a waterfront like the Tampa Riverwalk, there’s really no excuse not to make some noise about it. Tampa going all-in on the celebration isn’t just appropriate; it’s exactly the right call.

Getting there takes some planning. Parking at Julian B. Lane Park is limited, but the Bob Buckhorn River Center and several downtown garages are available. Better yet, hop the free TECO Line Streetcar from Ybor City and let someone else handle the traffic. Text TAMPA250 to 888-777 for real-time event updates, so you’re not the person who shows up at 9:31 p.m. wondering what that smoke is about.

Liberty by the Bay is free, it’s open to everyone, and it’s Tampa doing what Tampa does best: showing up loud, proud, and unapologetically ready for a good time. America built 250 years of history. Tampa’s going to celebrate every single one of them.
