TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County has issued a notice of public nuisance on a failed fish farm in Woodville.
The structure that had sat empty for nearly four years was demolished in February, however Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban said the site has been left in hazardous condition, citing debris and exposed materials.
Fines on the property, which sits outside the J. Lewis Hall Sr. Woodville Park and Recreation Complex, now exceed $35,000 and are accruing daily, according to Caban.
The notice issued by the County states the property owner must remove all debris and structural components and request an inspection of the site.
The notice gives the property owner 30 days to come into full compliance. If they don’t, the issue will be moved to the Nuisance Abatement Board in July where the County can place a lien on the property to recover costs and bring the property into compliance.
Previously, the Florida’s Right to Farm Act kept local government from being able to step in and manage these kinds of projects. But, the state agricultural certification that limited the County expired last year and was not renewed, allowing the county to demolish the structure.
“This property continues to pose a danger to children and neighbors. Our office remains committed to seeing this property cleaned up and holding the negligent property owner accountable,” Caban said on social media.
