Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is blowing back into Magic Kingdom, and it could be a golden moment for roller coaster fans.
The ride has been under refurbishment for 15 months but is set to return to the Frontierland lineup Sunday. During that down time, the rail has been replaced (the route remains the same) and the ride vehicles have been freshened up. In addition, Imagineers have played up the gold element of the ride, which originally opened at Walt Disney World in 1980.
“What we’ve done is expanded upon that lore that we had introduced with our queue … of Barnabas T. Bullion and the Big Thunder Mountain Co. always looking for the gold within the Big Thunder Mountain itself,” said Dan Flynn, executive show management with Walt Disney Imagineering. “And you’ve always wondered, where is the gold in the mountain?”
Visitors soon can get a rolling glimpse.
“As you crest the final hill, we find all this glimmering glitter all over that hill, and you actually see the gold mother lode for the first time,” Flynn said.
And then, in traditional theme park story style, something goes horribly wrong.
“In defiance, the mountain pushes you out, with an ominous warning, back to the station, warning miners of what happens to them if you continue trying to find the gold or dig into that cavern,” Flynn said.
The Big Thunder refreshening is part of a Magic Kingdom trend of updating existing attractions. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, a dark ride in Tomorrowland, recently reopened with new blasters and other elements. Country Bears Musical Jamboree, a Frontierland neighbor and opening-day attraction, modernized its playlist and production in 2024.
The coaster also is near fresh construction as Magic Kingdom adds two “Cars”-inspired attractions in Frontierland, and beyond Big Thunder will be a villains-based land.
“We want to invest not only in new experiences, but, as you know, we want to refresh and maintain and bring those some of our classic attractions for generations to come,” Flynn said.
“So this is one of our opportunities. Everybody likes Thunder Mountain. A lot of people take their kids on that first long roller coaster, so this is a great opportunity for them,” he said.
Disney previously announced that the new height requirement for Thunder Mountain will be 38 inches, down from 40 inches. Other WDW attractions at the 38-inch level include Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom; Slinky Dog Dash and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disney’s Hollywood Studios; and Kali River Rapids, a water ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Back at Big Thunder, there will be other fresh surprises, including 2,000 bats added in the approach to the ride’s rainbow caverns.
“We’ve taken that to the next level again. As the mountain is trying to keep you away from its gold, you’ll see a wonderful shimmer of colors, of rainbow all throughout the cavern that we’ve been able to bring to life here,” Flynn said.
“As you go up the mountain, the mountain starts to rumble and transforms the cavern into a more ominous sign of things to come, as it then pushes our unsuspecting guests over that hill onto their journey through the rest of the mountain,” he said.
