TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A portion of Alabama Street has a new honorary name of ‘Clausell Family Memorial Way,’ which the city of Tallahassee unveiled Wednesday morning.
The street sign honors the late Dr. James A. Clausell and his wife, Rev. Dr. Bernyce Hall Clausell.
Aaronetta Clausell Frison, daughter of the couple, said it was a great honor.
“Many people do great things, and they don’t ever get a thank you. But this- it’s just so surreal. It says it all. Love, thank you,” she said.

The two were a power couple during the civil rights era in the Griffin Heights neighborhood, per a press release.
They founded Calvary Baptist Church with their own funds on Joe Louis Street in the 1950s. The Clausells also worked with C.K. Steele to support black communities during trying times.
The family said the Alabama Street honorary designation was perfect as the family is originally from Alabama. One sign has already been installed on Joe Louis Street.
