SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A man was arrested after a road rage shooting that stretched across multiple Hillsborough County roadways, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Nicolas Totherow, 33, fired multiple rounds at a vehicle carrying four people, including a child, on April 29.
Deputies said the shooting was reported at 3:14 p.m. near U.S. 92 and Wiggins Road. The caller told dispatchers Totherow was following their vehicle and shooting at them, according to HCSO.
The caller stayed on the line as the pursuit continued north on Park Road and onto the eastbound Interstate 4 on-ramp, investigators said. Authorities said Totherow kept following the vehicle and continued firing before driving east on I-4 while the victims exited at County Line Road.
Deputies later located the victims and found their vehicle had been struck by gunfire multiple times, according to the sheriff’s office.
Detectives identified Totherow as the suspected shooter and took him into custody at about 6 p.m., HCSO said. A firearm was allegedly recovered from his vehicle.
During an interview, Totherow admitted firing multiple rounds at the victims’ vehicle and said he intended to kill the driver, according to investigators.
“This reckless and violent behavior put multiple innocent lives at risk on our roadways,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Thanks to the quick actions of our Communications Center and the coordinated response of our deputies and detectives, this suspect was taken into custody before anyone was killed. We will not tolerate violence in our community.”
Totherow is charged with attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, four counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, shooting at, within, or into a vehicle, armed possession of a controlled substance, and driving while license canceled, suspended, or revoked.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active.
