Activists have put up a billboard in Hialeah calling out Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart over the Trump administration’s immigration policies and the new “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility.
The billboard along the Palmetto Expressway went up Monday morning with the words “Diaz-Balart You Betrayed Us.”
The non-profit group “Keep Them Honest” paid for the billboard in Miami-Dade, where the Republican Diaz-Balart, South Florida’s longest-serving congressman, serves as the representative of District 26.
“His family has a legacy of defending immigrants here in Miami-Dade, and across this country, and he has done nothing to defend his family’s legacy and quite frankly, it is destroying that legacy,” said Chris Wills, a member of the group.
NBC6 reached out to Diaz-Balart’s office for his reaction to the billboard but haven’t heard back.
Wills said the congressman lines up with President Trump‘s mass deportation efforts and he also calls him out over his party’s support for the detention facility in the middle of the Everglades dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”
On Saturday, lawmakers including Democrats and Republicans toured the facility, and the political position on it was right along party lines, with Democrats calling it an awful place and Republicans saying it’s more than adequate to house thousands of detainees.
