FRIDAY. WDSU FIRST WARNING WEATHER. BREAKING NEWS SPIRIT AIRLINES HAS OFFICIALLY SHUT DOWN, LEAVING THOUSANDS OF TRAVELERS WITHOUT A WAY HOME. THAT INCLUDES SLIDELL INTERIM POLICE CHIEF DANIEL SUSANO, WHO IS STUCK IN ORLANDO. CHIEF, CAN YOU HEAR US RIGHT NOW? YES, SIR. HOW ARE YOU? SO THIS IS IMPACTING A LOT OF PEOPLE. WALK ME THROUGH WHAT’S GOING ON. WELL, YOU KNOW, MY FAMILY AND I DECIDED TO TAKE A QUICK WEEKEND TRIP TO ORLANDO TO GO TO DISNEY THIS WEEKEND. AND I USED SPIRIT AND I KIND OF JOKED THAT WE MIGHT NOT MAKE IT HOME. AND SURE ENOUGH, I WOKE UP THIS MORNING TO THE NEWS. AND HERE WE ARE. DESCRIBE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN ORLANDO. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE PANDEMONIUM AND AND HEADACHE RIGHT NOW. WELL, YOU KNOW, THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE CONFUSED. AND THANKFULLY THE OTHER AIRLINES ARE REALLY TRYING TO HELP OUT WITH THINGS, GETTING EVERYBODY BACK HOME. SO THEY’RE OFFERING A LOT OF INCENTIVES RIGHT NOW. ALL THE AIRLINES ARE REALLY EVERYBODY’S BEING SUPER ACCOMMODATING. SO I’M CONFIDENT WE’LL GET BACK TOMORROW SOMETIME. BUT YOU KNOW, IN THE MEANTIME, WE’RE JUST GOING TO HAVE FUN. ARE PEOPLE PLANNING ON DRIVING, FLYING? WHAT ARE PEOPLE RESORTING TO DO TO TO GET BACK HOME? I’M SURE SOME PEOPLE HAVE A MUCH FARTHER TRIP FROM ORLANDO TO NEW ORLEANS, RIGHT? YEAH. SO, YOU KNOW, RENTAL CAR IS ALWAYS AN OPTION, BUT A LOT OF THE AIRLINES ARE OFFERING, YOU KNOW, A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS OFF IF YOU CAN SHOW THAT YOU WERE AFFECTED BY THE SPIRIT SHUTDOWN. AND AGAIN, EVERYBODY, ALL THE AIRLINES HAVE BEEN REALLY ACCOMMODATING RIGHT NOW TRYING TO HELP OUT. SO IT’S GOING TO BE A LITTLE INCONVENIENT, BUT I THINK WE’LL MANAGE. AND WHEN YOU FIRST FOUND OUT JUST WHAT WAS YOUR JUST REACTION IN GENERAL THAT YOU HAD NO WAY HOME? YOU KNOW, I MEAN, THERE’S WORSE THINGS IN LIFE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT IN ORLANDO IS NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE STUCK. BUT, YOU KNOW, I JUST FIGURED, WELL, WE’LL FIGURE IT OUT. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport issued a statement following Spirit Airlines’ announcement that it was ceasing operations:”Spirit Airlines announced that it has ceased operations across its network. Passengers with upcoming flights to or from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport with Spirit are advised not to go to the Airport and should make alternative travel arrangements. More information is available at www.spiritrestructuring.com.”We recognize the significant disruption this decision may cause and remain confident that other air carriers will move quickly to help maintain service across the markets previously served by Spirit Airlines.”Between Saturday, May 2, and Friday, May 15, Spirit Airlines had 54 arrivals and 55 departures scheduled at MSY with a total of 21,438 available seats. The destinations include Fort Lauderdale, Florida (FLL); Orlando, Florida (MCO); Tampa (TPA); Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW); and Chicago (ORD).
