Inter Miami has yet to taste victory at its new home stadium, and Saturday night’s affair was the most dreadful of its attempts to do so.
Despite racing out to a 3-0 lead after 33 minutes against Florida rival Orlando City, Miami capitulated and fell 4-3, with Tyrese Spicer’s stoppage-time goal capping a furious rally and extending Lionel Messi & Co.’s winless streak at Nu Stadium to four matches (0-1-3). The defeat follows draws against Austin FC, the New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution and does little to calm the angst surrounding the club, which has already swapped managers after Javier Mascherano made way for Guillermo Hoyos.
For just over half an hour, it didn’t look like that would be the case. Messi had assisted on Miami’s first two goals — by Ian Fray and Telasco Segovia — and then scored on a sensational strike of his own, seemingly setting Miami on its way to an easy three points.

He was outdone by another Argentine No. 10, though, with Martín Ojeda’s hat trick (39th minute, 68th, 79th) pulling Orlando level before Spicer’s stunner sent the home crowd on its way in disbelief.

Orlando had entered as one of MLS’s worst teams, at 2-7-1 through its opening 10 matches, including a 4-2 loss to Miami at home on March 1. The Lions are also on their second manager of the season, with Martín Perelman replacing Óscar Pareja mere weeks into the season. The rematch, which was also billed as another showdown between Canadian goalkeepers Dayne St. Clair (Miami) and Maxime Crépeau, followed suit in terms of the attacking output. That may not put Canada manager Jesse Marsch’s mind at ease as he looks to select his starter for the World Cup, though Crépeau did have one spectacular four-save sequence.

For Miami, it won’t be home again until May 17, taking to the road for the next two matches against Toronto FC and FC Cincinnati. Given the club is 5-1-1 away from Nu Stadium, perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. Its next crack at that elusive first home win comes May 17 against the Portland Timbers.
