Flames tear through roof of USF Marine Science Laboratory in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A large two-alarm fire broke out Saturday at a building on the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus, sending plumes of smoke into the sky.

Firefighters with the St. Petersburg Fire Department say they responded to the blaze at the USF Marine Science Lab, where flames could be seen shooting through the roof as crews worked to contain the fire.

Officials say the building was safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

The Marine Science Laboratory building is over 80 years old and houses a wide range of high-tech labs and research tools available for students and partners from around the world, according to USF’s website.

As of Saturday night, crews said the blaze was controlled and remained on scene working to ensure no hot spots remain. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
