PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Two men were shot inside a vehicle near a busy Port St. Lucie shopping plaza on Saturday, sparking an investigation.

Officers with the Port St. Lucie Police Department say they responded to Walmart on the 1600 block of Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard at 6:36 p.m. for reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, investigators say they located two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital, and both are expected to survive. Their identities have not been released.

Detectives believe the shooting was not random and occurred in a vehicle, per PSLPD.

The scene remains active as crews process multiple locations tied to the investigation. A large police presence was observed in the area, including patrol officers, detectives, crime scene investigators, K-9 units, and specialized resources such as drones.

Authorities say they have identified persons of interest and are actively pursuing leads. Search warrants are also being sought as part of the investigation.

Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk called for public patience while emphasizing the high-stakes nature of the probe:
