A 50-year-old woman who was found in the Great Miami River in Dayton on Thursday, April 30, has been identified.

Shannon Ayles was found along the river near Island Metropark in the 400 block of North Bend Boulevard, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Her cause and manner of death were not available.

According to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center records, crews were called to the bikeway by the Great Miami River near East Helena Street around 4:30 p.m.

A 911 caller reported a possible body in the water while near the Interstate 75 overpass, according to a dispatch log. There was also a dead dog in the area, but it was unclear if it was related to the incident.

Ayles was found on the river’s edge, said Dayton police Lt. Eric Sheldon.

Homicide are continuing to investigate. It isn’t clear how Ayles ended up in the river or how long she was there.
